Portfolio: Warm, formal Squarespace design for a family photography studio

The website strategy & creative direction

Butler and Badou Portraits is a family photography studio with a traditional, fine art approach to their photos. They want their clients to feel like family portraits are a luxury worth investing in, but also an experience that they will enjoy.

Marian came to me looking for advice on how to make the website convert better. She said they were getting plenty of traffic from Google ads, but website visitors weren’t filling out the contact form or booking sessions.

I identified two main problems with their website:

  1. The design was disjointed: Half of the website was trying to be light and airy, and the other half was trying to be rich and grounded. We needed to get clear on the feeling B&B was trying to create and make sure that was communicated consistently throughout the design.

  2. The structure was confusing: I couldn’t easily understand the navigation structure or what exactly my options were as a photography client. We needed to reorganize the site in a more intuitive way and make it easy for people to inquire about different services.

After auditing the website and deciding on a brand direction together, I created a mood board to give us a clear design direction for the updated website:

For the structure, I made sure we clearly showcased Butler & Badou’s three main offers: Families, Boudoir, and Headshots. We also streamlined the navigation menus in the header and the footer with clear labels so visitors wouldn’t get lost or overwhelmed.

As far as content and layout, we gave visitors all the key information on each page: the studio’s location, who they would be working with, why they should work with Butler & Badou, and why their clients love them!

With the font & color choices, I wanted to create a balance between formality and approachability.

What do you think of the final result?!

Here’s what Marian said after working together:

"We needed an updated website that converted better. Emily was amazing with quality of work, communication, speed, and design. Our image is so elevated from the work that she did. I highly recommend her!"
